In the lead-up to The Game Awards, Geoff Keighley started teasing the mysterious, glowing monolith in the middle of the California desert, which was later moved into Los Angeles. While many gamers speculated on what franchise it was tied to, the monolith's mystery was solved a little prematurely, thanks to a trademark filing.

On Dec. 11, the annual video games event was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where the dark fantasy game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was the champion of the night. Viewers of The Game Awards also walked away winners after being treated to a parade of celebrity surprises and special announcements throughout the evening.

Clair Obscur was the hot favourite going into the awards, and the most-nominated game in the ceremony's history with a total of 12 nods. Its composer Lorien Testard won the award for best score and music.

Expedition 33 stormed The Game Awards 2025, winning all but one category it was nominated in, including the main prize: Game of the Year.
